LASIK & PRK Vision Correction

LASIK is becoming increasingly popular due to its ability to correct vision in a non-invasive manner. This procedure uses small lasers that reshape the cornea to improve astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness. People from a wide range of ages and lifestyles can all benefit from LASIK. Anyone who has had enough of bulky eyeglasses or irritating contact lenses is a potential candidate for LASIK. Many patients ask: “Is LASIK safe?” In fact, there is an incredibly low rate of complications involved with LASIK.

Before performing the procedure, Dr. Shmunes will meet with you to discuss your overall health, lifestyle preferences, and examine your level of refractive error—the degree of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. After your initial consultation, Dr. Shmunes will then create a personalized treatment plan specialized for your precise needs. After the LASIK procedure, most patients recover within as little as a few days.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is another type of vision correction procedure. As the first of its kind, PRK was invented before LASIK. Although LASIK is performed more often, PRK offers certain advantages for patients with thin corneas. PRK differs from LASIK in a few ways:

  • PRK does not go as deep as a LASIK treatment

  • PRK has fewer risks since there are no corneal flap risk complications

  • PRK is optimal for patients with thin corneas
