Biography
Dr.Hunt’s journey in medicine began during his undergraduate studies. He studied chemistry at the University of Texas at Dallas. Heavily influenced by his grandfather, John M. Hunt, PhD, a pioneer in the field of organic geochemistry at the Woods Hole Oceanographic institute, he initially intended to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps by becoming a chemist. However, his career focus changed during a research fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he worked as a medicinal chemist in efforts to create a new drug for African Sleeping Sickness. What captivated him about that experience was the purpose of protecting and improving people’s lives. It is the goal of medicine. So he shifted his career path and attended medical school at McGovern Medical School in Houston, Texas.
His interest in Ophthalmology began as a third year medical student whenever he saw the massive potential Ophthalmology had to improve people’s lives. Cataracts and cataract surgery were especially appealing to him, because cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world, and the vision loss is reversible with cataract surgery. He performed his residency at the University of Florida Health – Jacksonville, where he excelled and served as Chief Resident. During residency, he was known to constantly strive on behalf of his patients, often utilizing creative means to leverage community resources for his patients who would have otherwise had difficulty affording their care. He was also a diligent teacher to his fellow residents, for which he was recognized by the Society of Teaching Scholars with the Outstanding Resident Education Award.
Dr.Hunt joined Shmunes Vision primarily because of the shared ideals he holds with the practice. The Shmunes Vision slogan sums it up nicely: “Do what’s best for the patient, especially when it’s inconvenient for you.” Ophthalmology is Dr.Hunt’s passion, and his joy is seeing his patients healed.
