Dr. Neil T. Shmunes is one of Northeast Florida’s most distinguished and experienced eye surgeons. A board-certified ophthalmologist with sub-specialty training in oculoplastic surgery, Dr. Shmunes has been performing cataract and corneal surgery in private practice in Jacksonville since 1985, and laser refractive surgery since 1996. He is widely recognized as both a pioneer and innovator in the field, having refined techniques and technology over the past 20 years.

Dr. Shmunes previously co-founded and led the refractive surgery team at a large vision center in Jacksonville for many years, and also served as Chief of Staff, Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Chairman/Section of Ophthalmology, and on the Board of Directors at Baptist Medical Center Beaches.

Dr. Shmunes received his AA degree from Oxford College of Emory University and from the University of Georgia he completed his masters research and there was inducted into the Psi Chi Honor Society. He earned his Medical Degree from the Medical College of Georgia where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, and was inducted into the AΩA Medical Honor Society.

Over the course of his 35+ year career in North Florida, Dr. Shmunes has established a loyal clientele and become a trusted name for ophthalmological care, both generally and in his areas of specialization. He carries an overall “Excellent” patient experience ranking with a 5-star rating in US News & World Report.

Dr. Shmunes has a long history of leadership within many state and local medical associations. He has also donated cataract surgery services to the local community through the Gift of Sight program. After managing a large eye practice, Dr. Shmunes decided to work in a smaller patient-centered facility and will be doing research and teaching. When not caring for his patients, Dr. Shmunes enjoys reading and spending quality time with his family. At Shmunes Vision, he is able to do both, having opened the new practice in partnership with his oldest daughter, second generation ophthalmologist, Dr. Kathryn Shmunes. His younger daughter is currently a medical student and she’s considering going into the ophthalmology field, too.
